
About the Course
Learn about the fundamental production methods and principal raw materials and discover how they are used to make the key spirit styles. An exploration of the key practices and principles of serving spirits and the use of spirits in cocktails is also included in this course.
What level of knowledge will I need to start this course?
You will not need any formal qualification just an enthusiasm for the subject and willingness to learn. This course is ideal for anyone wishing to be introduced spirits in an informative and structured manner and is suitable for both the enthusiast and those entering or already working in wine and hospitality business requiring good level of product knowledge.
How does it work?
This short course consists of 6 modules which cover topics from raw materials and fundamental production methods, to how ingredients and production methods are used to make different styles of spirits, to serving spirits. Each module is designed to be interactive, so expect to post in discussion forums, watch videos, complete quizzes and reflect on tasks. Completing all the modules should take you 30 hours to complete (6 hours per week), excluding time for exam revision.
All our online qualification courses are designed to be interactive making learning more accessible and engaging. The course utilises social media to allow students to study alongside their peers under the guidance of a WSET tutor.
Students will be asked to taste and write notes on nine general styles of spirits which your tutor will then help you to structure using the systematic approach to tasting.
Exam
This course is assessed with a 1 hour written paper consisting of 50 multiple choice questions. The pass mark is 55% and is the last session of each course.

- Vodka, Flavored Spirits and Aromatised wines -
Learn about the raw materials and production processes used to produce the principal types of vodka, flavoured spirits, and aromatised wines. |
Module 5 |
- Mixing with spirits - Learn about the key ingredients and the factors to be considered when making a balanced cocktail. Learn about the key cocktail families and know notable examples from each. |
Module 6 |
- Revision and resources - Mock multiple-choice feedback examination which can be attempted as many times as the student likes. |
