WHO IS THE CERTIFIED SOMMELIER EXAMINATION FOR?

The Certified Sommelier Examination is designed for individuals who want to advance their knowledge and skills in wine and beverage service. To sit the exam a candidate must have successfully passe the Court of Masters Sommelier Introductory Certification Exam.

HOW TO PREPARE

The Certified Sommelier Examination is mostly a self-study program, however mentoring sessions and Exam Prep Sessions are available.

  • Mentoring Sessions
    Thirty-minute virtual office hour sessions for mentoring with Master Sommeliers are available and open to any CMS-A student.

  • Certified Sommelier Exam Prep Sessions
    Students can attend free Certified Sommelier Prep sessions offered virtually. Registration is through the Office Hours page. The program consists of five one-hour sessions spread over 10 weeks. These sessions provide a clear understanding of exam preparation and efficient study focus. Master Sommeliers and Advanced Sommeliers assist in small group breakout sessions as Course Aids. Large group sessions, which do not include breakouts, are recorded and available for on-demand viewing. Interactive breakout sessions require full student engagement.

EXAMINATION DETAILS

The Introductory Sommelier Course and Examination takes place from 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM over a single day.
It is divided into three parts:

Tasting Examination

Utilizing the Court of Master Sommeliers Deductive Tasting Method, candidates must describe and identify four wines (two white and two red) to the best of their ability. This is a written tasting that must be completed in 45 minutes.

Theory Examination

The theory examination tests candidates’ knowledge and understanding of the world of wine, beverage, and the sommelier trade. The test consists of multiple choice, short answer, simple math, and matching questions. Candidates must complete the 45-question examination within 38 minutes.

Hospitality & Service Examination

The practical service examination approximates a real restaurant environment, and candidates are expected to demonstrate salesmanship and knowledge while performing a variety of tableside tasks. Candidates may be asked to open still or sparkling wines, to recommend cocktails or spirits, to discuss food and wine pairing options, and to generally show their abilities as a restaurant sommelier. Candidates must arrive appropriately dressed and equipped for professional restaurant wine service.

IMPORTANT: the Theory and Tasting portions of the exam require a computer!

This exam is being offered on a digitized application called Examplify. Candidates are required to bring their own device, Windows or Mac laptops or iPads, for the Theory and Tasting portions of the exam.

The exam requires a computer HOWEVER it is NOT online. You will need to bring your device to the classroom.

PASSING REQUIREMENT

A candidate must achieve a minimum of 60% on all sections within one exam sitting. Successful candidates will receive a certificate and lapel pin signifying their certification as a sommelier by the Court of Master Sommeliers.

The Court of Master Sommeliers sets the global standard of excellence for beverage service within the hospitality industry with integrity, exemplary knowledge, and humility.

The Court of Master Sommeliers was established to encourage quality standards for beverage service in hotels and restaurants.
The first Master Sommelier examination was held in London, in the United Kingdom in 1969.
By 1977 the Court Of Master Sommeliers was established and has since become the premier examining body for Sommeliers worldwide.
Courses are now conducted regularly throughout Europe, Oceania, Asia and the Americas.

□ The venue Wi-Fi password will be given and device connection is checked.

□ Candidates will be let into the exam room after everyone has been checked in and the wines for the tasting exam have been poured.
□ A candidate may sit anywhere they would like in the room.
□ The Master Sommeliers proctoring the exam will introduce themselves and give basic instructions about the exam and the day's schedule.

Christopher Bates, MS, is an American born entrepreneur, public speaker and hospitality professional. He is known as a chef, sommelier and winemaker, and has spent over 20 years in all aspects of the hospitality industry, lending him a well-rounded perspective of all facets. Prior to completing his Master Sommelier Exam in May 2013, Christopher had racked up accolades such as Best Young Sommelier in the World and won TopSomm 2013.Christopher and his wife Isabel have settled in the Finger Lakes region of New York and have been a catalyst for growth in the Finger Lakes. He is an active member of the sommelier community and continues to educate independently, and with the Court of Master Sommeliers.

June Rodil

Born in the Philippines and raised in Texas, June is CEO & Partner of Houston-based Goodnight Hospitality, founded in 2019. The group includes Montrose Cheese & Wine, Rosie Cannonball, and MARCH, which received numerous accolades, including James Beard Award nominations. June has launched over twenty hospitality concepts and is a partner in June’s All Day. Her accolades include Wine Enthusiast’s Sommelier of the Year 2018, and she is one of 25 women in the Americas to earn the Master Sommelier credential.

Christopher Ramelb MS

Chris Ramelb, MS a native of Kaua'i, Hawai'i earned a Computer Science degree at University of Hawaii-Manoa and started his wine career as a business analyst at Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits. After stints at two legendary Honolulu retaurants he took the post of opening Wine Director at Senia, where he helped earn the restaurant a James Beard nomination for “Best New Restaurant” and a spot in Wine Enthusiast’s “America’s Top 100 Wine Restaurants”. After winning the coveted Johnston medal for the highest aggregate score on the Advanced exam, his passion turned toward wine education and helping Hawaii to further its beverage culture. He rejoined SGWS as the Restaurant Sales Manager in 2018, the same year he first passed the MS exam.
